Obituary of Ethan McIvor Mings

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ethan McIvor Mings on Monday, August 15, 2016, surrounded by family, aged ninety years. Beloved husband of the late Gwendolyn Mings (nee Murphy) . Loving father of Jerry , Michael (Linda) and Karen (Frank Paschert). Loved Grandfather of Rachael, Victor, Laurence, Jasmine, Chanel, Felicia, Malcolm, Shondra, and Lydia. Dear brother of Hulda. Fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews. Loving friend of Karen McGrath. Predeceased by his sister Esther. Ethan was born August 12, 1926 in St. Michael’s Parish, Bridgetown, Barbados. He graduated from Harrison College in Barbados before emigrating to Canada in 1955. He attended the University of Toronto acquiring a Bachelor of Education and later completing his Masters of Education from Brock University. He was a beloved Latin teacher, soccer coach, and a Lincoln Public Library board member.He retired as Principal of Governor Simcoe High School in St. Catharines. His many interests in retirement included his love of gardening, skating, cooking, reading, spending time with his grandchildren , as well as being an enthusiastic fan of President Barack Obama. Ethan’s family wish to thank doctors and nurses at the St. Catharines General Hospital and all the caregivers at The Orchard’s, Vineland for their kindness and support. Visitation will be held at Patrick J. Darte Funeral Chapel, 39 Court Street, St. Catharines on Saturday, August 20, from 7pm to 9pm and Sunday, August 21 from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, August 22 at 11am. Internment in Mount Osborne Cemetery, Beamsville. Memorial donations to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Society (800-267-4257) would be appreciated by the family.
