Obituary of Archibald Jamieson

Jamieson, Archibald (Archie) – At the St. Catharines General Hospital on August 6, 2011 in his 89th year. Predeceased by his loving wife Janet. Father of Stewart and Fraser. A graduate of the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, Archie began his career as a metallurgist at various foundries in Scotland. He came to Canada in the early 1950’s to work with Canada Iron Foundries in Hamilton as Plant Metallurgist and rose quickly to become District Metallurgist, then Plant Superintendant and finally Plant Manager of their Special Products Plant, the first such facility in Canada. During his career he published many articles on metallurgy and presented papers at numerous international seminars. He eventually became a management consultant specializing in productivity improvement, statistical quality control, occupational safety, industrial relations and management in an industrial setting. His professional designations included Professional Engineer (metallurgy), Certificate in Industrial Management and Certified Quality Engineer. Archie was a member of the Institute of British Foundrymen, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario. He was a professor of metallurgy, personnel management and industrial relations at Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology for 21 years. Archie was an accomplished ballroom dancer who was awarded a gold medal by the Canadian Dance Teachers Association. He was a member of the St. Catharines Roadrunners competing in numerous races including the Standard Run for the Grapes. At age 56 he logged over 1000 miles in a single year. He maintained a lifelong interest in his native Scotland. Archie was an avid photographer and an inspired poet. He will be sadly missed.
