Obituary of Kathleen Flynn

FLYNN, Kathleen (nee Toner) - Passed away peacefully at Tabor Manor on Monday November 20th,2023 at the age of 91. Devoted wife of the late Hugh Flynn, who predeceased her by nineteen days. Loving mother of Michael Flynn (Bob), Desmond Flynn (Cindy), Kevin Flynn (Melanie), Sharon Strong (the late Andy), Niall Flynn (Deanna) and Martin Flynn (Daryl). Cherished grandmother of Matthew, Rachel, Nicholas, Kathleen, Tara, Siobhan, Brianne, Mallory, Brendan and Julia, and dear great-grandmother of Penelope, Keegan, Norah, Viviana, Emmelene, Addison, Callen, Cara, Mackenzie and the late Alex. Dear sister of the late Gerry Toner (the late Amy), Patricia Meighan (John), the late Desmond Toner (the late Veen), Edward Toner (the late Marie) and Annette McKenna (Terry). Kathleen will be dearly missed by her many nieces, nephews and extended family members in Canada, Ireland and California. The family would like to thank the staff of Tabor Manor for their kindness and compassionate care. Kathleen was a kind and gentle soul who adored her family. She, Hugh and their six children emigrated from Ireland to Canada in 1973. A few years later she joined the Hotel Dieu Hospital kitchen staff as a dietary aide, where she worked for twenty years. She made many friends among her co-workers, who lovingly called her "Flower". After retiring Kathleen kept busy at Hugh's side, visiting and helping families and individuals who struggled. She loved children and especially babies. A beautiful smile, kind words and a blessing were given to family, friends and strangers alike and she was loved by all who met her. Kathleen kept an immaculate home, enjoyed baking, making floral arrangements and decorating. She welcomed all who came to her door and tea and treats were always plentiful. Her laughter, playful sense of humour and singing brought joy to her family and leaves us with treasured memories. In summer, she spent hours in her beautiful garden, planting, weeding, and enjoying the many flowers, trees and vegetables. She had a strong faith and a large collection of prayer cards to the Saints. Kathleen was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2002, and later attended the Alzheimer Day Program at Linhaven. As her illness progressed, she was eventually admitted to Tabor Manor Long Term Care where she once again made friends and became popular with staff and residents alike. She loved visits from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her loving husband Hugh visited daily as his health permitted, holding her hand and reading to her. Married for 68 years, their love was a beacon to all. We knew in our hearts they would not be apart for long. Now they are together again. Friends are invited to join the family at Garden City Funerals and Cremations (Formerly the Patrick J Darte Funeral Chapel), visiting Sunday November 26th from 2-4 pm and 7-9pm. Vigil prayers to be held at 3:30pm. A Funeral Mass in Celebration of her Life will take place at St. Julia Roman Catholic church on Monday November 27th at 11am with the Rite of Committal to follow at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens. In honour of Kathleen’s memory donations made to the Alzheimer Society of Niagara or the St. Vincent De Paul Society would be appreciated by the family.
