Obituary of Hugh Flynn

FLYNN, Hugh - Passed away peacefully at Tabor Manor on Wednesday November 1st,2023 at the age of 94. Devoted husband of Kathleen (nee Toner). Loving father of Michael Flynn (Bob), Desmond Flynn (Cindy), Kevin Flynn (Melanie), Sharon Strong (the late Andy), Niall Flynn (Deanna) and Martin Flynn (Daryl). Cherished grandfather of Matthew, Rachel, Nicholas, Kathleen, Tara, Siobhan, Brianne, Mallory, Brendan, and Julia and dear great-grandfather of Penelope, Keegan, Norah, Viviana, Emmelene, Addison, Callen, Cara, Mackenzie and the late Alex. Predeceased by his brother John and sisters May and Eileen. Hugh will be dearly missed by his many nieces, nephews, and extended family members in California, Ireland, and across Canada. The family would like to thank the staff of Tabor Manor for their kindness and compassionate care. Hugh, Kathleen and family emigrated from Ireland to Canada in the spring of 1973. It was a heartbreaking decision they made for the benefit of their children due the deteriorating sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland. While Hugh embraced his new country, Ireland was never far from his heart, but his new Canadian home allowed him to watch his six children thrive in a peaceful and safe land. Family weddings and births expanded the family to ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren bringing him much joy. A devout Catholic, his faith was strong and unwavering, and his charitable work brought him much comfort in retirement. Hugh had many passions including music (The Coffee Show Band and The Irish Club Singers), gardening, storytelling and especially writing including novels, short stories and historical recounts of his youth, family, and hometown. He loved animals, and especially dogs. His greatest passion was his love for his beautiful wife, Kathleen. His daily visits to hold her hand and read to her as her Alzheimer’s steadily progressed was a testament of his devotion to her, never fading and remaining his top priority until his final days. Friends are invited to join the family at Garden City Funerals and Cremations (Formerly the Patrick J Darte Funeral Chapel), visiting Sunday November 5th from 2-4 pm and 7-9pm. Vigil prayers to be held at 2pm. A Funeral Mass in Celebration of his Life will take place at St. Julia Roman Catholic church on Monday November 6th at 10:30am with the Rite of Committal to follow at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens. In honour of Hugh’s memory donations made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society or Start Me Up Niagara would be appreciated by the family. For those who are unable to attend, the Funeral Mass will be livestreamed at youtube.com/c/StJuliaRomanCatholicChurchStCatharines
