Obituary of Ding Sing Wong

Wong, “Danny” Ding Sing. Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Hospice Niagara on the morning of Friday, January 11, 2019 in his 87th year. Recently celebrated 63 years of love and marriage with his wife, Pik Sheung “Bessy” Wong (nee Seto). Beloved Baba of his children, Marlene (Michael Chuyow), Bob (Glenda), Fred (Grace), and Annie (Bill Quan) and was predeceased by his oldest son, Ken On (May). Adored by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Gong-Gong of Lisa (Matthew), David, Ashley, and Sarah; Ya-Ya of Kevin, Marissa, Ryan, Ethan, and Danielle; Bak-Gong of Jason and Alex. Dear brother-in-law of Ho Sin Yu Seto and Susan Chung. Fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews: Shirley, Nancy, Michael, Raymond, Teresa, Wai Ming, Eva, Mona, Dona, Millicent, Angela, and many others. An independent and adventurous man, Danny emigrated from Kaiping, China to Montreal in 1950, and then to St. Catharines after marrying Bessy in 1955. Together with his wife and late in-laws, Sam and Peggy Seto, they opened the Rice Bowl Restaurant in 1956, an institution in the city for nearly four decades. An active member of the Chinese community, he co-founded the Chinese Cultural Club of St. Catharines, was heavily involved in the construction of the Chinese Pagoda in the Victoria Lawn Cemetery, and was always willing to lend his driving and translation services to those who needed it. In his retirement, Danny enjoyed travel, tending to his roses and vegetable garden, and going for nature walks along Twelve Mile Creek with his grandchildren. His family extends their deep gratitude to the staff, nurses, and doctors at Hospice Niagara for their humour, kindness, and exceptional care during Danny’s last days. Visitation will be held at Patrick J. Darte Funeral Chapel, 39 Court Street, St. Catharines (905-685-6584) on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 6pm to 9pm. A funeral service will be celebrated in the funeral home on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 10 am. Interment in Victoria Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Hospice Niagara (905-984-8766) would be appreciated by the family.
