GAIN, Mary “Aunt Mary” (nee Houghton) – Passed peacefully at the Port Colborne Hospital on Sunday, March 21, 2021, one week shy of her 96th birthday. Aunt Mary is predeceased by her husband, Clifford Gain; parents, Samuel & Sarah Houghton; brother, Jack Houghton; sisters, Claire Houghton and Jean Horncastle; brother-in-law, Clark Horncastle; and niece Mary Horncastle. She is survived by her nephew, David (Toni) Horncastle; nieces, Judy (Kingsley) Van Nest, Irene (Joyce Veen) Horncastle and Sally Horncastle, and many great nieces and nephews. Aunt Mary was born and raised in Toronto and moved to Windsor after her marriage in 1954 where she lived for sixty plus years prior to moving to St. Catharines in 2017 where she lived with her niece, Sally. She worked all her adult life in the secretarial field, working the last twenty years of her career at Somerville Industries in Windsor. She also sang professionally for a short period of time, working her clerical job during the day and performing at night with the Allan Young Trio at a Toronto Night Club. She will be fondly remembered for her love of singing, including her duets with her sister, Jean, mimicking The Andrew Sisters and singing their classic, “I’ll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time.” Thank-you for the compassion and care shown by the Nursing Staff during Aunt Mary’s hospital stay and prior to her hospitalization, thank-you to the PSWs for their dedication and making it possible for Aunt Mary to live at home for as long as she did. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements have been entrusted to Patrick J. Darte Funeral Chapel. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, a graveside service will be held at a later date in Toronto. If so desired, a donation may be made in Aunt Mary’s memory to a charity of your choice.
